Milewise
$16 billion of airline miles and points go unused each year. Milewise was designed to help people maximize the value of their points.
In 2012 I joined Milewise as a full-time member of their early-stage startup team based in New York. In Milewise's main value proposition consumers would be provided with travel search results based on points, allowing them to make better purchase decisions. The search engine was originally created to help frequent flyers find flights they could pay for with either cash, airline miles, hotel points or credit card points. As well as tracking air miles and rewards points, it also helped users determine which flights were the best value by using that data.
Milewise raised funding of close to $2m from highly respected VCs, including General Catalyst and Founder Collective. After just three and half years approaches were being made by major credit card and airline companies to partner with Milewise, but it was more logical at the time to be acquired by Yahoo to ensure a successful exit for the team, who went on to help Marisa Mayer lead the special mobile product team in New York City.
